Legal aspects and statistics of the production system and bean seed certification
Abstract
The strategic value of the field of edible legumes in Venezuela is reflected in its link with daily consumption habits and high foreign currency outflows for imports of this important food input. The trend of the last 17 years in terms of seed and commercial bean production has decreased drastically, therefore the scarcity of seed and grain for consumption continues to accentuate and the gap between national production and the requirements of the population is supplied with high amounts of imports. It is estimated that the demand for bean beans is 75 million kilograms and that its per capita consumption decreased from 7 to 3 kg/person.
