Abstract
Plantains and bananas are grown in more than 120 countries and are a valuable source of carbohydrates for more than 400 million people in tropical countries. In Tropical America and the Caribbean, the fruits of bananas and plantains (Musa spp.) have a high socioeconomic and nutritional value, their production generating considerable income and employment. Diseases are limiting factors in these areas, and producing countries invest large sums of money in research studies, technology transfer, and disease control.
