Abstract

The potato cyst nematode (PCN), Globodera spp., is considered a limiting factor in areas of the world dedicated to potato cultivation; It affects yields, increases production costs and causes tuber shortages (Photo 1). Losses caused by this nematode are difficult to estimate and vary with the degree of infestation of the land, nematode population, variety of potato grown and environmental conditions. In any case, it is considered that the losses could be from 13 to 58% of production in the Andean countries (Franco 1993). This pathogen has a restricted host range within Solanaceae and can survive in crop fields for many years.
