Conservation methods for sugarcane inflorescences Case: Hybridization campaigns at INIA Yaracuy Yaritagua Local Station.
Abstract
Hybridization campaigns are the basis of any genetic improvement program. Hybridization is the action and effect of crossing individuals of different genetic constitution. Obtaining a sugarcane cultivar requires rigorous processes and techniques which begin with the selection of the parents and end with the obtaining of a new individual that will be more productive than those already existing. The first sugarcane improvement works consisted of the collection of panicles under free pollination. Very soon the studies were directed towards finding a better control of the crossings until reaching the use of cloth bags to protect the crossing between the female (♀) and male (♂) parents, known as biparental crossing.
