Abstract

The importance of studying the Coptera genus comes from its efficiency as a biological controller of problematic flies in agroecosystems, livestock farms and in human health. The present work contributes to the knowledge of Coptera in Venezuela. Entomological material studied from the Institute of Agricultural Zoology Insect Museum of the Central University of Venezuela; University of Zulia Museum of Arthropods and Centro-Occidental University Lisandro Alvarado entomological collection. Twenty-eight species of the genus Coptera are described, distributed in different natural regions of the country: Coptera altamirana sp. nov., C. armata sp. nov., C. bastidasi sp. nov., C. bergantinensis sp. nov., C. brachycera sp. nov., C. calicinversa sp. nov., C. confluens sp. nov. C. deplanata sp. nov., C. diademata sp. nov., C. dorsellata sp. nov., C. edentata sp. nov., C. expansa sp. nov., C. gracillima sp. nov., C. haywardi Loiácono (redescription), C. interioris sp. nov., C. lyra sp. nov., C. miza sp. nov., C. nasuta sp. nov., C. oritucensis sp. nov., C. perlonga sp. nov., C. porifera sp. nov., C. protracta sp. nov., C. pseudoculata sp. nov., C. quadrata sp. nov., C. radiata sp. nov., C. savanicola sp. nov., C. spinea sp. nov., C. strigata sp. nov., C. vulgatissima sp. nov. These species could not be grouped due to the high interspecific variability of the characters.
