Reaction of bean varieties grown in Cuba to the bacterial disease of halo blight
Abstract
The bean, Phaseolus vulgaris L., is widely cultivated in tropical and sub-tropical regions where it is considered a source of proteins, carbohydrates, fibers, and minerals. The bacterial disease is known as Halo blight caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola (Ps. pv p.) has a great incidence worldwide. The wide variability of this pathogenic bacteria requires a continuous search for resistance sources. The objective of this study was to determine the reaction of twelve varieties of beans grown in Cuba to different races of Ps. pv p. Plants were inoculated to nine races of Ps. pv p. and evaluated in a greenhouse. We studied the response to the infection of varieties on leaves and pods. It showed three kinds of response to bacteria: cultivars susceptible to all the races, cultivars resistant only to races 3 and 4, and cultivars additionally resistant to races 1, 5, 7 and 9. The results of this study indicated that different bean genotypes have different resistance levels to Ps. pv p., and can be used in the pyramiding of genes with appropriate methods to provide durable resistance.
