Selection of snuff Virginia promising lines in Cuba with resistance to blue mold and pata prieta in Brazil’s conditions

Abstract

The Brazilian company Souza Cruz is recognized for more than 60 years as one of the biggest producers of cigarettes in the world, so they focus their attention on the management and care of this Solanaceae. The fungal origin diseases like Peronospora hyoscyami f. sp. tabacina Adam and Phytophthora parasitica var. nicotianae Breda de Haan induce important damages to this crop leaves, making it unusable for the cigarettes production process, nowadays this two diseases are present in Brazilian seedbed’s areas, that is why is necessary to create a management of genetic breed program in Cuba focused in obtaining vegetal varieties with resistance to this pathogens. Through the genealogic selection, a breeding method was obtained the first filial generations of crossing over the Brazilian variety PH-89 and the Cuban Virginia Resistant, which is a donor of resistance against blue mold and black shank. During the 2006-2007 campaign were selected in the F2 generation 26 lines, in the 2007-2008 42 plants were selected in 26 lines always keeping in mind the resistance to diseases and the phenotypic features of the Brazilian varieties. In the 2008-2009 harvest, was made a selection based on families with 30 lines as a result of the crossing. In the 2009-2010 period, the amount of 17 promising lines was accomplished which will be passed through Lines test to select the future commercial variety for the Brazilian conditions.
